      " Nutrition During Pregnancy " { part B }

Health Education Plan & Implementation Proposal

The objective for our society as a whole of improving nutrition for women during pregnancy - so that both mothers and dependent offspring may develop as healthily as possible - is best planned so as to employ a wide spectrum of promotional techniques building on models or approaches as referred to on page 2 .

Within B.H.B area a 'healthy alliance' of staff of D.H.A and other bodies such as National Childbirth Trust will sponsor popular outreach programmes via several media :- e.g. it is possible to mount displays of relevant posters and literature on stalls set up in Romford and Barking town centres where thousands of local women pass each week when shopping. Well-informed health care staff can be at hand to answer any queries from the public. From time to time health promotional exhibitions are staged in public libraries , halls and communal centres in addition to the colleges of higher education - which complement wall posters and leaflets often present in such places of open access throughout the year. Mobile exhibition displays could be set up in caravan(s) that may be parked for varying durations in targetted local communities, where statistical and demographic analysis have shown there to be a significant need. Secondary schools may be able to include relevant aspects of nutritional theory in lessons for sixth formers; and librarians generally should be encouraged in their duty of maintain stocks of apposite books in reference or borrowable collections.

Local radio stations may be pleased to cooperate by offering airtime to series of programmes on womens' health issues, including opportunities for phone-in by listeners in response to issues raised, e.g. on proper nutrition during pregnancy. Occasional documentary programmes will be broadcast on national and satellite TV networks giving updates on current theory and discoveries in the field of pre-conceptional and antenatal care , including nutritional issues. No visitor of female gender to high street shops could fail to notice the many popular weekly , monthly and seasonal periodical magazines aimed at women who are or intend to become mothers. Not only newsagents, but many other stores stock these publications of wide mass appeal. Through them there is unending opportunity for authors to present infomative promotional articles to an eager readership. Commercial advertisers also will be encouraged to contribute to the nutritional information provided, bearing in mind the protection afforded by existing legislative restraints on misrepresentation of goods.

Advice offered at pre-conceptional and ante-natal clinics by G.Ps and other healthcare professionals - such as nurses, midwives and dietitians - will focus in part on the importance of correct nutrition and how this is best to be achieved in each individual's case; bearing in mind the economic status , ethnic or culturally determined food preferences, and current health status of the mother-to-be. It may be that the prospective mother can be given help to claim welfare benefits , allowances or other aid enabling her to be better nourished and protected against disease than she could otherwise afford. Telephone help lines exist which people may call into in order to receive more information.

Not only during college presentations , but also at antenatal clinics' group meetings  ( to which male partners may additionally sometimes be invited )- it is possible to make use of locally produced audiovisual materials to emphasize the message. It is useful if men understand and can support the nutritional goals of their spouse during pregnancy. I have included with this assignment several overhead projection transparencies which I composed and was able to use to good effect during a 2nd semester Redwood College presentation for a group of mixed gender 96/04 students.
